After English degree at Durham University, joined Scarborough Evening News as indentured trainee in 1989, moved to Yorkshire Post in 1995 and to The Times in 2000, initially based in London. Was the newspaper’s north-east correspondent from 2003 until 2011. Past four years focused on long-term investigation into child sexual exploitation. Nominated as news reporter or journalist of the year at the Press Awards seven times in the past 10 years.
